The Kazakhstan aviation authority is conducting an investigation into the crash of Azerbaijan Airlines (J2) Flight J2 8243, which occurred on December 25, resulting in the tragic loss of 38 lives, while 29 others survived. Experts are examining various factors, including potential Russian military involvement in the incident.

Details have surfaced regarding the crash’s timeline, potential causes, and survivor accounts. Conflicting reports suggest weather issues, drone activity, and even missile interference may have contributed to the tragedy.

Flight J2 8243, operated by an Embraer 190 aircraft, departed from Baku and was en route to Grozny, Russia, when unexpected events disrupted its journey. Reports indicate adverse weather conditions, including dense fog near Grozny, prompted the pilots to divert toward Aktau, Kazakhstan. Tragically, the aircraft crashed two miles from Aktau airport.

Witnesses captured the plane’s steep descent on video, showing its crash and subsequent explosion near the airport. Footage from the scene revealed the plane’s rear fuselage lying intact but upside down in a field, highlighting the crash’s violent nature. Aviation authorities have retrieved both black boxes from the site for analysis.

Officials confirmed there were 67 people on board, comprising 62 passengers and five crew members. Among them, 38 lost their lives, while 29 managed to survive.

Reports from Azerbaijani sources allege that a Pantsir-S1 air defense system fired a missile during the incident.

Russian authorities have denied emergency landing requests at their airports, reportedly directing the damaged aircraft across the Caspian Sea to Aktau, Kazakhstan. It is also alleged that GPS jamming affected the plane’s navigation systems during its sea crossing.

Investigations are underway by Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Russia, with the Kremlin urging against premature conclusions. Early statements from Azerbaijan Airlines suggested “external physical and technical interference” with the aircraft, though specifics were not disclosed.

Several survivors reported hearing external impacts before the crash, contradicting official claims that an exploding oxygen canister caused the damage.

Two survivors recalled explosions in the sky over Grozny approximately 90 minutes before the crash. One described an explosion near her seat, while another recounted hearing two loud bangs.

As investigations continue, authorities aim to determine the precise causes of the crash and hold accountable any parties responsible for this devastating incident.
